The family follows the contamination into a network of sealed reservoirs, private contractors and manipulated emergency broadcasts. An ancient organism is moving through the city's water supply, adapting to every attempt to contain it. Meanwhile, the people responsible for protecting the public are working harder to control the story than to stop the threat.

With their home no longer safe and official assurances falling apart, David and Mooka must decide whom to trust and how far to go to expose the truth. The Ancient Blood (70 AD)

In 70 AD, a promise of peace leads Dacian commander Vesper into the hands of a trusted Roman ally. Left for dead, he is brought back by Ilona through a forbidden ritual using the Ember Heart. The man she saves returns with a hunger she cannot control. Taking the relic, Ilona flees and binds her descendants to a terrible duty: hunt the creature she brought into the world.

In London in 1888, Hunter Alaric follows a stolen fragment into the British Museum. His quarry is a respected gentleman who has worn many names. Recovering the stone should bring Alaric closer to ending Vesper's reign, but evidence hidden in the Hunter records suggests that destroying their enemy could release something worse.

In the present, three hikers stumble into the restricted wilderness surrounding a billionaire's Carpathian mining operation. The billionaire is Vesper. His machines are breaking into the earth that once answered Ilona's ritual, and the last Hunter is closing in. When one hiker begins to change, a pursuit that has lasted centuries becomes a race to keep an ancient prison sealed.

Moving between these three lives and eras, The Ancient Blood follows the consequences of a betrayal no generation has escaped. Each recovered piece of the Ember Heart brings the truth nearer—and forces the Hunters to question whether their inherited oath will save the living or finish the disaster Ilona began.
